HackMcGill is McGill’s student hacker collective, most known for our organization of McGill’s largest annual
hackathon, McHacks.
We’re looking for ambitious and friendly individuals passionate about tech to join our organizing team for the
2023-2024 school year. You’ll find descriptions of the roles we’re looking to fill below.
All organizers are required to attend weekly all hands meetings and team standups during the school year and over
the summer. The average time commitment for organizers are 5-10 hours/week, though exact time commitment varies by
team
and is dependent on time of year.

Sponsorship
The Sponsorship team builds and maintains relationships with sponsors that support McHacks.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain relationships with sponsors
- Represent McHacks with extreme professionalism as the first point of contact between our team and sponsor
representatives
Desired Skills:
- Have strong interpersonal, writing, and verbal skills
- Good negotiative abilities
- Prior experience in sales or sponsorship
- Bonus: Familiarity with CRM software (Salesforce, Hubspot)

Communications
The Communications team upholds the voice and tone of McHacks through social media, promotional campaigns, and
campus outreach.
Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain the voice, tone, and style of our HackMcGill and McHacks brands
- Manage our HackMcGill and McHacks social media accounts
- Create social media and promotional campaigns to grow our audience and increase engagement
- Draft professional and published content for various communication channels including our websites, emails,
sponsorship packages, and other materials
Desired Skills:
- Experience in copywriting
- Experience in social media management and promotional strategies
- Familiarity with social media management tools
- Bonus: An avid user of social media

Design
The Design team crafts the look and feel of HackMcGill, bringing our brand to life on web, mobile, and print.
Responsibilities:
- Create visual motifs and cool illustrations for that ~aesthetic~
- Maintain a consistent design system and brand language
- Design marketing and sponsorship assets like swag and signage
- Design user interfaces and experiences across our website and internal tools
Desired Skills:
- Have experience with design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite)
- Familiarity with video editing tools (Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro)
- Familiarity with prototype tools (InVision, Origami Studio)
- Bonus: Familiarity or experience with frontend development

Development
The Development team builds the tools, services, and platforms that power McHacks. This includes our backend API,
static websites, and web applications.
Responsibilities:
- Ability to write quality, maintainable, ~clean~ code
- Develop the frontend for our static sites, and web apps
- Build and maintain our backend API
- Plan how to scale and improve our internal tools and public-facing platforms
Desired Skills:
- Have experience with MERN Stack (MongoDB, Express, React, NodeJS)
- Have experience in frontend development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript)
- Familiarity with yarn and/or npm
- Familiarity with responsive web design and development best practices
- Familiarity with Github/Git

Experience
The Experience team shapes the hacker experience at McHacks and maintains our HackMcGill community presence.
Responsibilities:
- Build and shape a hacker experience at McHacks that aligns with our values and brand
- Plan a series of workshops to be hosted at McHacks
- Plan activities at McHacks to create a memorable and unique experience
- Source mentors of various skill sets and manage our mentorship system
- Organize opening/closing ceremonies at McHacks
Desired Skills:
- Experience in building curricula and hosting workshops
- Experience in organizing large-scale events, particularly ceremonies
- Experience as a hackathon participant
- Familiarity in understanding the experiences of hackathon participants

Finance
The Finance Lead is responsible for managing the day-to-day finances of HackMcGill including expenditures
associated with running McHacks, applying for student grants, and submitting SSMU audits.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee our HackMcGill bank account and finances
- Create and maintain our annual budget
- Manage our reimbursement system
- Work closely with the Sponsorship team to create invoices and agreements
Desired Skills:
- Experience with accounting and handling large accounts
- Experience in a financial role (other student clubs, internship, etc.)

Logistics
The Logistics team oversees the operational aspects of running McHacks from organizing meals, recruiting
volunteers, and arranging travel.
Responsibilities:
- In case of a hybrid event, arrange transportation and organize food and snacks throughout the hackathon
- Recruit and train volunteers to assist our organizing team
- Search for a venue that fits our needs and plan the venue layout
- Coordinate with the Design team to create and order swag
Desired Skills:
- Good negotiative abilities
- Experience with event planning
- Bonus: Experience with dealing with local Montreal companies
